How We Bill
Hourly Rates
For matters that require ongoing legal work, our lawyers bill at an hourly rate. Rates range from $250 to $400 per hour, depending on the nature of the matter and the lawyer involved. You will be informed of the applicable rate before retaining our services.
Flat-Fee Services
Certain services are available for a fixed fee, giving you cost certainty from the outset. Flat-fee billing is available for:
- Simple Estate Planning — including the preparation of wills and related documents
- Real Estate Transactions — including purchases, sales, refinancing, and drafting services
- Independent Legal Advice — provided in connection with agreements requiring a certificate of independent legal advice
Where flat fees apply, the amount will be confirmed in writing before your matter proceeds.
Limited Scope Representation
Rather than retaining a lawyer for full representation, limited scope representation allows you to engage a lawyer for a specific task or stage of your matter only. This can be a practical way to access professional legal support while keeping overall costs lower than a traditional full-scope retainer.
Legal Coaching
Legal coaching is available for clients who have chose to represent themselves and want professional guidance along the way. A lawyer can advise you on the steps you need to take, help you prepare documents, explain applicable law, and assist you in getting ready to represent yourself without taking full conduct of your matter. Because you remain responsible for corresponding with the court and the opposing party, this option can significantly reduce your overall legal costs while ensuring you have the support you need.
Disbursements
In addition to legal fees, most matters involve disbursements — out-of-pocket costs incurred on your behalf during the course of your matter. These may include filing fees, registration costs, title searches, courier fees, and other third-party expenses. Disbursements are billed separately and will be communicated to you clearly as they arise.
